In 2013 I decided at the age of 51 to go back to school and get my Bachelor’s Degree. As you can imagine this seriously cut into my creative time. Forty-five weeks out of the year I was spending 20 plus hours a week doing homework while working full-time. I’m happy to report that I graduated this year; the computer has been moved out of my studio and my sewing machine now resides there along with my new easel/design wall that was my graduation gift to me.
I might not have had a lot of time to quilt but I did find the time to buy fabric, lots and lots of fabric. I also took the time to think about what I wanted to sell; I always knew it would be quilts, but what size and type would be important depending on how they were presented. I have always thought of my quilts as art and decided to learn how to present them as art by mounting them on canvas. I have to say; all those business and technical classes were helpful in learning to think through the various steps involved in this whole process.
What drives my creativity?
I love fabric! Batiks to be exact. I live in the country on a dead-end dirt road surrounded by acres of forest. My travels take me into the Adirondack Park and the Rensselaer Plateau. I see potential quilts everywhere I look. I especially love mountain landscapes and you will see a lot of them in my work. I also lived in Hawaii for six years and the occasional seascape will make its way into my work.
